Fundraising with a Restaurant
Gift Card Fundraiser

by Deane Brengle, Editor of the Fundraising for Small Groups Newsletter

Selling discount cards has always been a popular fundraiser. Now, a new version has made its debut - the restaurant gift card fundraiser.

This new restaurant gift card fundraiser is popular because:

  • Everyone loves to eat out.

  • Many restaurants to pick from nationwide.

  • Customers save 60% off their meals.

This booklet is designed to introduce you to fundraising with restaurant gift cards if you haven't done it before. If you are already doing a traditional discount card fundraiser this booklet will help you discover the latest offerings and ideas in restaurant gift card fundraising.

Overview of this Fundraiser

Restaurant gift cards are sold by direct sale.

Restaurant gift cards are ordered from your fundraising supplier. They are distributed to the membership who sells them to parents, relatives, friends, supporters, and the general public. Money is collected at the time of the sale.

Cards are sold for $20. Customers go online to Restaurant.com and redeem each $20 card for $50 worth of certificates that are available from over 10,000 restaurants nationwide.

There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from and your supporters will surely find one (or more) that fits their taste and budget. You can even preview the list of available restaurants in your area online.

Potential Income

Fundraising with restaurant gift cards is an easy way to raise funds. Unlike some regular discount cards, these restaurant gift cards have businesses that your supporters are eager to visit. And it's a good fundraiser to repeat year after year.

The profit is good too. No matter how few or how many cards you sell - your group will always earn 50% profit (buy each card for $10 and sell it for $20).

You should expect an average of 5 cards to be sold by each person participating in your fundraiser.

Complexity

This fundraiser is very straight forward, but there are a couple of questions you should ask yourself:

  • Minimum order - there is a minimum order of 10 cards, but even the smallest groups should be able to sell ten cards.

  • Payment is upfront before you get your cards. But the company takes all the risk out of it - the cards don't have an expiration date and unredeemed cards can be returned for refund if not scratched or damaged.

Additional Hints

The restaurant gift card fundraiser is great for the tough economic times we are all facing right now.

You've probably found that most of your fundraising customers are cutting back on their discretionary spending budget and not purchasing as much from you as before. That is to be expected in tough financial times.

But the restaurant gift card fundraiser taps into a different part of their household budget, the dining/entertainment budget.

No matter what - we all still eat out occasionally. It never hurts to remind your customers that not only are they helping your group and its cause out but they are also saving 60% off their meals out that they would be normally buying at full price if it wasn't for you and your restaurant gift card fundraiser.

Recommended Fundraising Supplier

I've taken the time to carefully review the supplier that provides the restaurant gift cards and have found them and their program to be top notch. I am recommending Efundraising.com and their restaurant gift card fundraiser.

Both Efundraising.com and the underlying supplier of the restaurant gift cards, Restaurant.com, have an excellent long standing reputation.

When I went online to check out the available restaurants in my area I was very impressed. There were several that I normally eat at with my family and a few more I had been meaning to try. I see where I could save some serious money.
